From site:  The Process of Analyzing Photography - In order to create successful photographs, it's important to look closely at successful photographs.  After carefully describing, reflecting on, and formally analyzing works by famous artists, students at Mark Twain Middle School got a sense of the principles and elements of composition and were able to create their own compelling images.  Learn the three steps of analysis and you, too, will be able to put theory into practice....

Balance. Emphasis. Movement. Unity. Repetition. These are all principles of visual art. They are also useful terms  when teaching students how to write essays.

Teaching students how to analyze and shoot photographs can enliven curriculum in any classroom. What better way to help students understand the Holocaust, the Great Depression, and the Civil Rights Movement than by looking at photographs? Powerful images could greatly enhance English class discussions of literary themes of rebellion vs. conformity, innocence vs. experience, racism, and national identity. In science classrooms, students could study photographs depicting the impact of humans on the environment, and in math class, students could learn about proportion, symmetry, and basic geometry concepts. The possibilities are endless.
