Dare to Compare

NCES offers a sample of questions on national standards benchmark testing (NAEP) for several subjects and grade levels. See how you compare with students nationally and from around the world. Pick a subject, grade level and how many questions you want to see (5, 10, 15, or 20).

The subjects tested include Civics, Economics, Geography, History, Math and Science. Grade levels vary by subject. After students answer the questions and get their results, they can click on the Results from Around the World or the National Performance Results icon next to each question to see the percentage of students nationally (and in some cases regionally) answered correctly. These icon links also provide more background facts on the subject question and links to related resources.

Whyville Virtual Reality World

Whyville is a virtual world where kids ages 8-15 can come together to learn and have fun. Students design their avatars and visit different locales to play educational games and learn socially responsible behavior. As Whyville citizens, kids learn a broad range of subjects, from art history, science, and journalism to civics and economics.

Whyville is an outgrowth of the company’s extensive research and practical experience related to learner-centered, hands-on, inquiry-based education. The company partners with Getty, NASA, the School Nutrition Association, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, among many more, to create their educational content.
