Bouncy Maps World Data

From site:  SELECT a subject from the top menu and watch the countries on the map change their size. Instead of land mass, the size of each country will represent the data for that subject –both its share of the total and absolute value…

… The website offers users a new way to look at the world by resizing countries on the map according to a series of global issues.

SHOW® covers a wide scope of subjects based on datasets provided by the most authoritative sources in their fields. New subjects are periodically added, please feel free to send us your suggestions.

Worldmapper

From site:  Worldmapper is a collection of world maps, where territories are re-sized on each map according to the subject of interest. There are now nearly 600 maps. Maps 1-366 are also available as PDF posters.

The maps and data files cover 200 territories, mainly United Nation Member States plus a few others to include at least 99.95% of the world’s population. For a map identifying them see the labelled territory map, and for a cartogram giving them all equal prominence see Appendix A (Areas Included). Further details about their names are given in Technical Notes for Land Area. Also shown on the maps are 62 other areas, mostly small islands, which do not have unique data but are assigned to and included in the data of the 200.

The maps presented on this website are equal area cartograms, otherwise known as density-equalising maps. The cartogram re-sizes each territory according to the variable being mapped.

Globetrackers Mission: Finding Dewey

Globetrackers Mission engages students in grades 2-6 to learn geography, map skills, and world cultures through an episodic story. Each week, a new episode, in the format of a blog post, written by fictional teenagers Geo and Meri, appears on the Globetracker’s Mission site. They travel the world on a secret “mission” for an unnamed government agency. Along the way, they look for clues and blog about what they see to their Uncle Globetracker.

Students who follow the mission learn about world geography as they respond to Geo and Meri’’s questions using maps, images, and links provided. Concepts include landforms, map skills, cultures, major landmarks, continents, oceans, rivers, and more.

You will need to have Google Earth loaded on your computer to play the game.
