Mr Nussbaum Math Games

Mr Nussbaum has 87 games and numerous interactives for kids in grades K-8 to practice their basic math skills as well as pre-algebra. Most are for use on computers. Some are available in formats for iPad and tablets.

There are math games and interactives in:

  • Number sense – counting, skip counting, multiples, number line
  • Number operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, including interactives for helping students work through long division problems
  • Number comparison – greater than, less than, equal to
  • Money – counting and comparing sums
  • Fractions – including mixed fractions
  • Decimals – place values
  • Rounding
  • Geometry – shapes, calculation of angles
  • Telling Time
  • Patterns
  • Probability
  • Basic word problems
  • Comparison of two-sided equations
  • Differentiated equations

The games are categorized by grade level, Many of the games have videos to show you how to play them. Children can print a certificate when they successfully complete a game.

If you will use a game or interactive in the classroom, I recommend you play it yourself first, on a device the children will use. I noticed a few glitches where the instructional video did not match the content, or a game did not have a help feature to assist a child if they are stuck. Functions Window is one example.

A section for parents and teachers suggests ways to support your student’s use of the interactives at home and in the classroom.

Content aside, pop-up ads often appear when moving to a new page and must be closed before viewing the content. The authors say there will be an option to block ads sometime in 2018.

An app version for iOS with about 60 of the games is available for a small fee.

MathFLIX

The site has more than 1,000 videos that provide instruction in a broad range of math skills for middle and high school students .  They include pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, statistical analysis, roman numerals, and vocabulary.  The videos are organized by topic.

Mathtrain TV

From site:  Mathtrain.TV is a free educational “kids teaching kids” project from Mr. Marcos & his students at Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, CA.  Mathtrain.TV was created by middle school mathematics teacher, Eric Marcos.  It is part of the Mathtrain.com Project and was created to host our student-created math video lessons all in one place.  It is Web 2.0 friendly with its ability for users to generate “ratings” and “comments”.  Our middle school students use a tablet pc and screen-capturing software, Camtasia Studio, to create the math tutorials.  The site is powered by PHPmotion, a free video-sharing software.

Students at Lincoln Middle School create math video lessons (screencasts or mathcasts) which are used for classroom instruction and posted onto sites such as Mathtrain.TV, Mathtrain.com, iTunes, YouTube, TeacherTube and Google Video. Our students work hard at creating the content and construct the best explanations they can in our unscripted format. The videos are offered free, “as is” (under a Creative Commons agreement) and we take no responsibility for any inaccuracies or errors which may exist in the content or site. All videos are reviewed (and sometimes further edited) by a credentialed math teacher. In an effort to make our videos available to many different learners, we are in the process of closed captioning (CC) our videos. At the moment, there may be two versions of the same video lesson on this site; one with and one without captioning. On other videos, we may “burn” the captions right onto the video itself. As technology progresses, we hope to offer our viewers the ability to toogle on and off between closed captioning and even alternative language subtitles. On Google Video, viewers have the ability to turn captioning on or off via the “CC” button.  For more information about how to caption your own videos, go here:  www.dcmp.org/ciy.
